SML Hub Liverpool is a small, relationship-centred Self Managed Learning community based in Liverpool.
We support young people aged 11–15 to manage their own learning, explore who they are, and begin shaping the lives they want to lead - within a caring, supportive community.
Our approach
Self Managed Learning is an innovative approach to education that places young people at the centre of their own learning. It has a proven track record of success in preparing young people for the next stages in their lives.
At SML Hub Liverpool:
- There is no imposed curriculum
- There are no classrooms or formal lessons
- There is no fixed timetable
Instead, learning is shaped by the young people themselves, supported by mentors who walk alongside them with care, curiosity and trust.
What learning looks like here
Learning at SML Hub Liverpool grows through:
- Young people’s interests, questions and passions
- Individual and collaborative projects
- Shared conversations and decision-making
- Time for reflection, play and creativity
- Engagement with the wider local community
Life is not treated as something to prepare for later. We value young people being fulfilled, engaged and supported now, as well as developing skills for the future.
A person-centred learning environment
Each young person’s learning journey is their own.
We support young people to decide:
- What they want to explore
- How they want to learn
- When they need support or challenge
- What responsibility looks like for them
Learning is structured and supported, but never imposed. This helps young people develop confidence, self-awareness and the ability to learn independently - skills that matter throughout life.
Community and wellbeing
SML Hub Liverpool is a learning community grounded in mutual respect, support and collaboration.
Wellbeing is central to our work. We intentionally keep the community at a size that allows:
- Relationships can be strong and trusting
- Young people feel safe and known
- Mentors can offer consistent, thoughtful support
Research and experience show that small, relational environments support happier, more motivated young people - and better long-term outcomes.

Recent sessions at SML Hub Liverpool have been rich with conversation, creativity and connection. Young people are exploring real-life questions, discovering what matters to them, and learning how to live and learn alongside others with care and integrity.
This work is held by dedicated mentors who are committed to supporting young people - not directing them - as they grow into themselves.
