Three practical guides to help young people take greater ownership of what they learn and how they learn.

How can we help young people become confident, capable learners – not simply for school, but for life?

The Self Managed Learning Series brings together three comprehensive guides from Dr Ian Cunningham, drawing on more than 50 years of research and practical experience in Self Managed Learning.

Written for parents, educators, mentors and anyone supporting young people with their learning, the series offers an alternative to the idea that education is simply about teaching a set curriculum.

Instead, it asks three bigger questions:

How can we support young people to manage their own learning?
What is actually worth learning?
How can that learning happen?

Together, the three books provide both the thinking behind Self Managed Learning and practical approaches you can use with young people.

What's included

BOOK 1: Supporting Self Managed Learning

Helping young people to manage their own learning

Start with the foundations.

Book 1 introduces the principles of Self Managed Learning and explores the role adults can play in helping young people become more autonomous and take meaningful ownership of their learning.

It looks at the balance between freedom and structure, empowerment and boundaries, and introduces a strategic framework for helping young people think about their learning in the context of the life they want to lead.

Throughout the guide you'll find practical exercises, reflection questions and real examples from practice.

BOOK 2: What to Learn

A Framework for Life, Work and Learning

If learning isn't simply about following a prescribed curriculum, what is worth learning?

Book 2 explores what young people may need to learn to lead fulfilling lives – looking beyond school subjects to the knowledge, skills and experiences that matter in life and work.

It explores the role of parents, goal setting and the Five Questions Model, helping adults support young people to make thoughtful decisions about the direction of their own learning.

BOOK 3: How to Learn

Choosing and Using Different Ways to Learn

There is no single best way to learn.

Book 3 takes the ideas from the first two books and turns to the practical question of how learning can happen.

It explores a wide range of learning methods – from reading, conversation and observation to projects, mentoring, practice, research, travel and play – and provides a framework for choosing approaches according to the learner, what they want to learn and the circumstances.

Part practical guide and part reference book, it's designed to be returned to whenever a young person needs a different way into their learning.

Who is the series for?

The books are designed for anyone who wants to support young people to become more active participants in their own learning, including:

- Parents and home-educating families

- Teachers and educators

- Learning mentors

- Alternative education practitioners

- Learning communities and schools

- Anyone interested in a more person-centred approach to education

You don't need any previous knowledge of Self Managed Learning. The books have been designed as a three-part series, beginning with the core principles before moving into what to learn and how to learn.
